THE controversy over former Miss Singapore World Ris Low's English has inevitably brought into focus the fact that schools here are not entirely blameless for the deterioration of Singaporeans' standard of English.

In the education system here, every teacher has a basic obligation to teach proper English to their charges. Unfortunately, Ris, with her sub-par command of English, is not the only product of our system. (Really? But... I feel that her english is really the only product! Come on, she's from MDIS. How good has her o level english be?)

One reason for Singaporeans' dismal English is that some teachers in the primary and secondary schools do not have a good command of British English themselves.

For example, I have witnessed them spelling "sulphur" as "sulfur", and writing "she was fine (sic) for feeding monkeys".

With repeated exposure to such poor English in a decade or more of education, weaker students are unlikely to be able to write and speak good English.

Many of the "novel" methods used to teach English in primary school do not benefit the many children who are not highly proficient in the language. (That's very true, I must admit. When you come to JC, you will realise how pathetic your english standard is, as compared to the argumentative essays you have to choose among the 12 choices. That's probably why students struggle for GP in JCs.)

Omitting formal phonics lessons between Primary 1 and 3 and using English textbooks which cover several grammatical concepts (instead of one item at a time) in a lesson are essentially fast-paced learning strategies that will not help weak pupils build a strong foundation in the language.

In many secondary schools, only the writing of compositions and comprehension skills are taught, with scant focus on grammar and the correction of errors.

Mistakes in English are often only corrected by teachers of English classes, but are largely overlooked by other teachers handling subjects like mathematics, science, history, geography and even literature. (I do not think so, AT ALL. My history tutor corrects my english, all. the. time )

Students thus remain blissfully unaware of their grammatical mistakes. How can such students sharpen their skills in English when flippant teachers ostentatiously condone grammatical errors? (Super subjective. I bet the author hates teachers and MOE)

At the end of the day, do we want more people to be like the former Miss Singapore World 2009 and other professionals who might excel in their fields of expertise, but are frightfully handicapped in English?

Perhaps, it is time to consider how "old-fashioned" teachers taught most older Singaporeans English effectively up to the 1970s without any project work, workbooks, assessment books, computers and dubious modern teaching techniques.

Otherwise, I am afraid that in the future, only the bright, gifted and the like will be able to write and speak good.
